Guy Suganuma called the meeting to order at 10:00a at Central Community College in Grand
Island.
1. Review syllabi and address the following: (Suganuma)
Gregg Christensen displayed examination copies of potential textbooks to use for the six
courses. Lisa and Gregg will work on a “Suggested Resource Textbook” list.
Action Item:
Lisa or Gregg will distribute textbook list upon completion.
The group split up into two groups to work on finalizing the six syllabi. The Opportunity
Analysis course has enough material to justify this course as a 3 semester credit/4.5
quarter credit class. This is a change from the original 2 semester/3 quarter hour credits. A
recommendation was made to table this discussion for the afternoon session. Community
college CIOs will be meeting on Feb 27, and we will await their final approval.
2. AAS program – faculty/instructor credentials for 4-year transfer (Suganuma)
* UNL (Mittan/Thornton) – no report. Will contact Glenn Friendt at UNL for further clarification.
* UNK (Suganuma) – no report
* UNO (York) – Lisa reported on behalf of Anne York. Anne stated in an email that the syllabus and
curriculum planned are more crucial than faculty and approval will be up to the UNO CBA undergrad
policy committee.
* Peru State (Juricek) – Todd Drew at Peru State said that they will accept ALL community college
equivalent course work providing the student has earned a C or better grade.
* Wayne State (Suganuma) – Wayne State does not offer any Entrepreneurship curriculum.
12:30-3:00p
1. Entrepreneurship Standards Crosswalk Matrix (Williams) – Brock Williams led the group in
identifying national entrepreneurship standards with Nebraska’s six community college courses.
The next step is to take each of these standards and identify the levels of mastery –
introductory/awareness, skill building, in-depth. It was suggested to add this to the next meeting
agenda or perhaps this summer. (see attached)
2. Articulation with high schools (similar to the Nebraska Initiative)
Lincoln Public Schools - They currently offer three courses that could possibly
articulate with Intro to Entrep, Opportunity Analysis and Marketing. They will be
working on articulation agreements with Southeast’s Tech Prep coordinator as well as
UNL.
Hastings Senior High – Gwen Davidson told the group that there are two courses at
Hastings that have Tech Prep articulation - Accounting and Marketing. The Marketing
course has a semester of Entrepreneurship & International Marketing—a beginning and
advanced level.
Columbus High School – Steve Woodside reported that he would need to look at the
current business education courses.
Morrill High School – JoAnn Wilson reported that they currently have a Tech Prep
agreement for their Accounting course. She will consider looking at the semester class,
General Business and possibly change that to Intro to Entrep; along with an
Entrepreneurship semester course that would fit with the Business Plan course.
Mitchell High School – Mitchell currently has a Tech Prep agreement for their
Accounting and Microsoft Apps courses. Ellen Ramig will be looking at revamping her
Business Administration course which currently has units in Marketing, Management,
and E-Commerce) as a dual credit.
Norfolk High School - Kelly Krueger reported that they currently have an Intro to
Entrepreneur course and will be articulating this course through Tech Prep.
There was a question about the “window of time” for transferability.
ACTION ITEM: Lisa will
check with Carol Jurgens, Nebraska Tech Prep Coordinator, for further clarification.
3. “Think Outside the Box” workshop locations and dates (Salmen-Thomas)
Lisa reported that Amy will be sending an update on future workshop dates.
4. UNO Summer Camp for Entrepreneurship (juniors) – dates and application (York)
Gregg distributed budget information on the Entrepreneurship Camp for high school students.
Grant opportunities will limit participation this summer. High schools and community colleges
were encouraged to explore grants and other funding.
5. Lori Cappel – DVD promo - Gregg showed part of the entrepreneurship video from The
Power of Choice and brought copies for anyone to use.
6. Biz Find – NBDC (Kearney) – Odee Ingersoll, Certified Economic Development Finance
Professional, Director
Ode demonstrated the BizFind product which can perform power searches with over 30 criteria.
The site/resource is designed to be used as a portal to bring individuals, business owners, sellers
and bankers together.
7. Links to Nebraska Standards Report – Gregg distributed the report.
8. Grants – Coleman Foundation is offering grants from $500-$3,000. Deadline is
February 15.
9. Opportunity Analysis course hours – Agreement and consensus to change this course to 3 semester/4.5 quarter hours was made by three of the six community
colleges.
ACTION ITEM: Lisa will email the rest of the three community colleges for
consensus on the change of hours.
New Business:
10. Molly McGrath, a graduate student at UNO, has offered to develop a
curriculum/workshop for grades K-8. Laura Bulas offered to share her BizKids workshop
model with Molly. The BizBuzz book is another great resource. Tammy Fisher at UNL
also has offered a workshop entitled, Making Your Own Job.
11. Marilyn Schlake is working with the 4-H clubs of Nebraska to develop entrepreneurship
curriculum. She will be seeking curriculum development partners.
12. New Chair for Curriculum & Support – Guy announced that he is stepping down due to
work obligations. We will await appointment or volunteers for this co-chair position.
The meeting adjourned at 3:00pm.
