Part I: SkillsChecklist is in its most “boring” form. Add value to the assessment: Possibilities:
* High school and college curriculum transparent
* Articulation
* Tech Prep agreements – statewide
* Employers – give students a sense of skills for a position in company
* Students – portfolio piece and certification process
5 high schools are piloting and receiving a stipend.

Checklists – prioritize what you CAN get done; all skills may not be met at the high school level. May get pared down to high school level, college level
Pre and Post Assessment – January/Mary (Matt Gotschall) – on both skills and CALS
Part II: Life Skills Assessment – CALS from NDE; PDP from SkillsUSA
Self-paced; 5 parts; takes 2 years to get through; online
Department of Ed – workshop on PDP – January 23 – Greg Stahr
CareerSafe - $12/student – geared to high school students (OSHA certified) – Harvey Rosenbaum (Norfolk HS) shared more information about the program. Duane Ohlrich asked if it would be a pre-requisite for the welding class. Many expressed concern about the high rate of accidents among youth – over 200,000/year. Agest 16-24 are the highest risk of injury.
Schuyler High School (Ed Fejar) – 22 kids went through the training last week
Wayne State is using CareerSafe software along with the textbook.

Generating interest and awareness – among youth and parents

Auto & Diesel
- provide information on machines/tools – give demonstration and a snapshot of the career (salaries, skill sets, education)
4 different career areas –
Diesel & Automotive – 20 teachers, counselors and bus drivers – provide lunch – over 200 attended recent session in October 2005

WestPoint (Richard Johnson) – hosted at Valmont or Smeal
Columbus will be celebrating their 50th year anniversary. Maybe tie in to that… (Duane Matson)
Lori Scherer (Smeal Fire Appartus) – offered her company as a site to host and wants to include Scribner, Dodge-Howells, Oakland –Craig, etc).
Involve kids at the middle school (Harvey Rosenbaum)

Awareness Activities/Presentations
Career Clusters Institute (Phoenix, AZ) – first awareness that career clusters are being done at a national level; Nebraska is not isolated in this initiative.
Governor’s Summit (Omaha, NE) – all pathways were presented
Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) (Michigan) – certification for the production worker – focusing on employability skills – McGraw Hill published a book called High-Performance Manufacturing. Great for Manufacturing 101 course.
MSSC skills standards are infused in the textbook.
CCC is looking at offering certification at their testing centers.

Dr. Riley has offered his graduate assistants to help with the camps.
